Photographic Solutions: Digital Photography

Digital Photography is a growing area of interest and has prompted development of many photographic solutions for techniques when taking digital pictures.  The intent of photography is to capture a moment in time.  For some, this is only the beginning.  Some photographers try to capture a moment in time along with some emotion that they would like to convey.  They do this by using photographic solutions such as depth of field, dynamic range and field of view.  These techniques can transform a digital photo from what is actually there into something the photographer wants you to see.
When considering depth of field a photographer must think about the focal point of the photograph.  This means where the focus needs to be.

Although many digital cameras are set up to automatically focus the picture, many of them have options where the user can set the focus to a specific setting.  Setting the depth of field determines how much of the picture you actually see.  For example, if you were to take a picture of someone on one side of a lake with your default camera settings then the picture would come out very clear of the person, but the grove of trees on the other side of the lake would look very out of focus.  Using this photographic solution you can reset your focus and depth of field to create a clear picture of both the person and the trees.

Using dynamic range when taking digital photos is another way that you can control how a picture looks.  When taking pictures in areas where the light varies you often get an image that is overexposed, too bright, and underexposed, too dark, thus under or over-illuminating parts of a photograph.  Using dynamic range as a photographic solution you can capture a photo that accurately represents the varying degrees of lighting in a photo.  To set the dynamic range of a photograph you can utilize a filter, if your camera is made for it, or you can alter the exposure settings.

Another popular photographic solution for digital photography is using the field of view technique.  This photographic solution is achieved in the end by stitching photos together in photo-friendly software.  By considering the field of view of the camera’s lens one can take many pictures of one object that account for distortion and perspective in a regular snapshot.  By taking many pictures at various angles the photographs can be stitched together to create a larger photograph with one perspective that is un-achievable with one picture alone.

There are various photographic solutions for Digital Photography.  The afore-mentioned techniques are only some of the techniques used.  Implementing just one of these photographic solutions can greatly increase the quality of your photos.
