Interactive Photography: Equipment
The defining feature between regular photography and interactive photography is equipment. Both types of photography employ cameras but that is about the only similarity they share. Even the final products from each are drastically different. Conventional photography produces one single image within a specific range of viewing while interactive photography produces much more complex and comprehensive images.
The same type of camera used in conventional photography can be used when engaging in interactive photography. The difference lies not within the camera, but in the different types of equipment used along with the camera. Interactive photography uses many special tools to manipulate photographs and then turn them into something more in-depth than a regular photo. There are four major tools that separate interactive photography from conventional photography and they are: fish-eye lenses, special tripods, tripod heads and software.
There are various types of lenses available for all different types of photography. The purpose of lenses is to control the way the light enters a camera and thereby manipulate how the camera interprets what it sees. When taking a picture, without a lens or any special attachments, there is an amount of distortion in every photograph. As you get to the far edges of a picture the elements in the photo are less accurately represented than the elements that are located in the center. When a photographer uses a fish-eye lens the normal distortion of the photograph is being manipulated to create a more exaggerated type of distortion that will look much different than a normal photo.
The benefit of using this type of lens in interactive photography is that when the images are all combined it will create a single photo with an accurate display of all the elements in the photo, not just the ones in the center.
The remaining tools used in interactive photography are all extensions of the purpose of the fish-eye lens. Used in conjunction with the lens they allow the photographer to use the pictures being taken to achieve different end results. For example, the special tripods used in interactive photography are usually topped with special heads that can control the turning angle of the camera.
This means that the photographer has great control over the degree of accuracy the end result of the photographs will have. Some photographers also use tripod heads that mount onto the tripod and hold the camera in a specific location. The benefit of using this is that the photographer can turn the camera on its side and take pictures in a controlled way in 360 degrees.
The major tool used in interactive photography in conjunction with the camera is software. Without special software there would be no way to combine the pictures taken into one single image. The special tools used in interactive photography and its end results are what separates it from conventional photography.
