Green Screen Photography: Make your own screen
Green Screen Photography is a photography technique that utilizes special tools to produce a final composite image. It uses a green screen placed behind a subject that is removed digitally and replaced with another image. While green screen photography is very prevalent in various types of media and advertising there is not reason why you can’t try it for yourself. With a few simple tools you yourself can be on your way to creating your very own green screen like the ones used in green screen photography.
While there is some debate over what materials are most acceptable for making the type of green screens used in green screen photography the truth is that you can make you own effective green screen by utilizing just about any smooth green surface. When creating your own green screen there are two options for construction: fabric or a hard smooth surface that can be painted.
When using fabric to create a green screen you should stick as close as possible to the actual green screen fabric used in most green screen photography. This means you will have to keep a few things in mind:
- Try not to purchase anything too reflective. Reflective materials can create lighting spots that will compromise the effectiveness of the final composite image.
- The lighter and brighter the green the better. Do not use dark green.
- Try to find something that is crease resistant. Smoothness is key in green screen photography. A wrinkled screen can cause a picture to become unusable for final compositing.
- Heavier materials are better as they provide more consistent colour and will not show anything on the other side of the material. Be careful though as a heavier material can be more prone to creasing.
Once you have selected your material you simply use it as a backdrop for whatever you are trying to photograph. Rolling the fabric to move it as opposed to folding is much better for retaining smoothness. Whenever you are ready to use it simply hang it according to whatever is suitable for your application. You may use thumbtacks or create a stand to hold it.
If you decide to use a solid material instead of fabric make sure you find something suitable for green screen photography. Just as with the fabric you will need to ensure a smooth surface, which means no weather warped wood or anything like that. You will need to paint the surface a light, bright green. Although you can use almost any light, bright green color it might be best to use what is called a chroma key paint. This paint is very saturated and bright and is often used in creating backdrops for green screen photography. Again, smoothness is key. Make sure there is an even coat of paint; this will reduce colour variations and provide a good background when compositing the final image. Once you have completed your screen, whether it is fabric or a solid surface, you will then be ready to try green screen photography.Links:
