Green Screen Photography: Basic Concepts

Green screen photography may seem like a complicated process but with a basic understanding of the key concepts used anyone can comprehend the technique.  Details of green screen photography are sometimes complicated, but the overall process is easy to understand.

The first thing you need to know is that in green screen photography a green screen is used.  A green screen can be either a large fabric drop or a smooth hard surface that is green.  The green screen is not just any green though.  It is actually a very light, bright and saturated green often referred to as a chroma colour.  Green screen photography uses this green colour because it is farthest away to human skin tones on the colour spectrum.  By ensuring there is great contrast between the green screen background and the subject in the photo final composition of the photo is much easier.  Green screen photography uses this green screen technique to separate the subject in the foreground from the green background and place it onto a new background by using a computer.

Once the green screen is set up the subject is photographed in front of it.  Plenty of thought is given to the orientation of the subject with regards to what the final product will be.  For example, if the final background will be in front of a military service airplane then the subject might be saluting.  Lots of thought is also given to lighting in green screen photography.  In order for the picture to be successfully edited with a new background there must be an even colour in the background, meaning the green screen must be uniformly lit.  The even colour allows for easier removal of the green background once it is put into the photo-editing software.

After the pictures are shot in front of the green screen they are loaded onto a computer.  Most often they are loaded in to computer software that is made to handle green screen photography.  Once the pictures are loaded into the software the photographer basically tells the computer to “remove anything green from the background of this picture”.  When the computer removes all of the green all that is left is the subject photographed (like a person saluting).  This is one of the major advantages of green screen photography; it can put anyone anywhere without having to set foot out of a studio.  Once the computer has removed all of the green background a new one can be put in its place.  The final compiled pictures then shows the subject on the new background of your choice.

As you can see there is not much complication in the process as all you really do is take a picture and let the computer do all of the complicated stuff for you.  While the finer points of green screen photography are a little more complicated it is actually easy to follow the basic process of how it gets done from beginning to end.
